Performance
The differences between these midsize SUVs begin under the hood. The Mazda CX-9's trims are outfitted with a turbocharged 2.5-liter, four-cylinder, 227-horsepower engine. They also have an automatic six-speed transmission and standard all-wheel drive. The all-new 2024 Mazda CX-90 has two powertrains available. One option is a mild-hybrid 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-6 gas engine that produces 280 horsepower. The additional option is the powertrain for the Mazda CX-90 PHEV, which is a plug-in hybrid system with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gas engine. This system creates 323 combined horsepower.
Appearance
There are also beautiful differences between the 2023 Mazda CX-9 and the 2024 Mazda CX-90 on the exteriors. The Mazda CX-9 has exquisite, athletic styling with smooth, angled contouring on the doors. A chrome accent bar runs along the base of the nose and sides. The swooping hood shows off a pair of definition lines. The nose has a wide grille that links to the stunning headlights. These units feature a circular bulb topped by an angled LED bar. The larger Mazda CX-90 has a more muscular look with a taller nose. In addition to having a chrome accent bar running across its bottom perimeter, there is a small chrome air vent close to the front fenders. At the front, the chrome accent bar surrounding the large grille turns outward to connect to the deep-set LED headlamps. Below the headlamps, the bold air vents make an athletic statement.
Features
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 has a few features not offered in the Mazda CX-9. These include an upgraded infotainment system, a 12.3-inch central display screen, and a leather-wrapped dashboard. Both of these premium SUVs are offered with a navigation system, a digital instrument panel, driver's memory settings, an auto-dimming rear mirror, a hands-free liftgate, keyless entry, Android Auto with Apple CarPlay, USB ports across the three rows, an elite sound system, heated seats in the first and second rows and numerous assistive driver's technologies.
